I have not used freewebs ot 123-reg however I have experience with domains and registrations, etc....

When you setup a domain you need to provide the registrar with a dns record. This would be an IP address fore example: 192.45.23.0

This number would be provided to you by freewebs. (It would be the DNS record for freewebs) - sometimes there are two. (which is great - you should be able to put two DNS records into your registrar: 123-reg)

freewebs has to know that you have registered a domain and that your existing site should be configured to use it.
1) freewebs has to setup their DNS records
2) freewebs has to point the domain to the folder on their harddrive containing the files for your website.

All of this setting up is typically done within a day: if there are delays in setting up the domain it is most likely going to occur on freewebs side of the equation.

However, once everything is setup it should be usuable within 24 hours. Typically people are told upto one week, Because all the internet service providers have to get the information from freewebs about the dns change so that those ISP subscribers can get to your website via your domain name.
This process is automated - which is why it's usually 24 hours, but I suppose there are some ISPs that may only get the latest DNS records once a week or so.

Beyond that delay - it's just a delay in how quickly freewebs gets the DNS records entered. This delay you can't help, but this is typically automated too and the whole thing is almost always completed in 24 hours.

I hope this helps.

All you need to do is point the A record to whatever IP address your website is on.

Look on your hosts site for what you need to put into the registrar's settings. Go to the registrar and put them in.

P.S. If you transfer it to a new registrar, they charge you for the time all over again. You should have registered where you wanted to move it to. I know too late.

If the host works without tranfering it, leave it registered where it is untill it is about to expire. Then move it.
