Because the reality of it isn't happy sex loving ladies making an honest living. It's desperate, drug addicted women, too often forced into it by violent men,

I think that it is a case of - 'There but for the Grace of God go I'.
Anyone who has never been involved in prostitution (that includes me) finds it dirty, demeaning and offensive. I really used to be quite verbal about it. I then moved to a country where it is everywhere, I even wrote to the local paper about it.
After living 'next door' to a red light district, I got to know some of the people involved and discovered that - OMG - they are as human as you and me!
Some people do it by choice, most prostitutes do it because there is not an easier way to make some money. I have travelled to some countries where there is not any other real choice - your babies are starving, there are no jobs - but the tourists are loaded and looking for sex - what do you do?
I am no longer offended by it, but I am still embarrased that 'the oldest profession in the world' is the only option for an awful lot of people on this planet.

Would you mind having a prostitute living next door to you?
Would you be offended or embarrassed if your mother, wife, sister or girlfriend became a prostitute?
If you are male and a prostitute accosted you in the street would you take the risk of contracting AIDS or other STD? Remember, there are no regular medical checks and they do have hundreds of clients.
Perhaps most women are disgusted by the act of prostitution but through the ages some women in dire straits have been forced to prostitute themselves to feed their families.
Where prostitutes operate you will most probably have pimps. Some prostitutes are 'slaves' coerced into the sordid occupation.
Embarrassed because 'a lot of people' don't wish to be associated with them and they do have a detrimental effect upon the locality and the house prices in areas where they operate.
Offended because 'a lot of people' find it is not compatible with their particular moral code.

People, at least most people, are conditioned to react negatively to prostitution. For years and years is been condemned as a despicable sin and a perversion. But then, there was a time, not very long ago, that people, especially girls, were taught that the sex act, even with a husband, was shameful and unpleasant. It's interesting how dramatically different attitudes are in Nevada where prostitution is legal. There, it's not even a topic of conversation, and the culture hasn't crumbled.

As far as I'm concerned, pros provide a public service. If the women are disease free, not setting you up to get whacked by a pimp, & don't rob ya blind, I fail to see a problem. Many people that oppose the act are people that wouldn't normally have any difficulty finding a willing sex partner. This is not the case for untold numbers of people. The times I used the "service" , I was 13,000 miles from home in a war(Vietnam) & certainly didn't have access to the type of woman I usually would pursue. Add to that the fact that you could very well be very dead the next day,& it makes perfect sense to me to substitute these folks for your normal partner.

Perhaps it's not prostitution but sex in general that embarrasses people. It is very common for people to be out of touch with their sexuality and would never consider using their sexuality to feel good - which is a wonderful feeling that we are all supposed to experience. In essence human beings share something like 90% of their genes with animals - and what do animals do - have lots of sex and keep their species alive.
Perhaps people fantasize about going to a prostitute but would never admit it.
But through the last few centuries sex became forbidden among the churches as a form of control over the masses. Sex and sexual energy relates to the power of human beings. Dissempowering the masses was an agenda of the Roman Catholic Church once upon a time. People were made to feel dirty/unclean if they had sexual thoughts - it's still influencing people today.
This is something that needs to be undone. I'm not condoning using sex as a low form of pleasure. Sex is in actual fact one of the most powerful ways to experience states of bliss and unite with the essence of the god within us.
Sorry this is long answer but nevertheless a quick reply to your question is just shallow.

Because they're not comfortable with the idea of sex as a transaction. Even in the context of a loving, emotionally connected relationship you can still reduce it down to a transaction.
Making it a transaction for money as opposed to slightly less tangible resources can be a bit hard to handle for some people though I guess.

Most people offended by the idea of prostitution are those that practice the most deceitful form of it... marriage!
How many housewifes use sex to get the washing machine they want, demand exclusivity from their men yet get off with a toy boy first chance they get.
Most marriages are ended by women who discover that if they get rid of the husband they still get a big chunk of his wages, help from state benefits, guaranteed custody and control of the kids, and possession of the house. They use the first excuse they can get for a divorce, and if he doesn't provide one, they create one.
After being nothing but a good natured, generous, loving, caring, honest husband twice and being totally ripped off both times by wives who totally conned me, I can say I've never been decieved by a prostitute (never used before 2nd divorce).

I guess because some people think it's not morally or ethically right, they believe that a person should respect their body and in different religions it is known that a woman's body is her temple and they should respect it and not go out and do things like that.
I personally don't think it's right. I think it's a cop out way to make alot of money by belittling ones self in order to fill either some sort of void or they are really vain.
