Magnetic Resonance Imaging gives a clearer picture of what is happening inside an area of the body. It has been widely used, but one of the most popular uses is in brain scans where it is extremely sensitive at detection of tumours and other pathologies.

In the joints, like the knee for example, imaging of the internal structure can show injuries to the menisci and cruciate ligaments.

Traditionally MRI was not often used to perform scans of an area of the body which cannot be held extremely still. This is because the MRI required a few minutes to perform and any movements within the target area would ruin the quality of the image. This means the chest and abdomen would be difficult to scan this way.

However, recent advances have allowed the scan to be taken in much shorter times, such as the time you could hold your breath comfortably. This has been used to great effect.
