I'm fixing a ladies 89 Silverado. The calipers are held in with 3/8" allen bolts. The outside of the bolts are round. The top bolt is stripped. Someone used too small of an allen to get it out, so they bent the squeal tab back on the brake pad.

I used a grinder and made 2 flat spots on the bolt to try and get it out with a crescent wrench, didn't work.

I drilled a 1/4" hole through the head and put a 1/4" grade 8 bolt in there to pry it out but that didn't work.

I have a 220 arc welder and a 110 mig.

Any ideas how to get this bolt out? My jeep has been sitting in her driveway for 3 days now, while I have her truck.

unbolt the brake line from the caliper. Remove the other caliper bolt completely. Rotate the caliper off the rotor until the pads clear. If you can't rotate it that far then rotate it as far as you can then cut the brake pad clips off and slide the outside pad out then you'll be able to move it more. Then slide it back (towards the car) it'll slide off the bolt then you can remove the rotor and grab hold of that bolt with some vise grips and remove it. When you put it back together make sure to grease the outside of those bolts good or the caliper will stick.

You can try and weld a bolt into the original bolt head hole, but you had better be a good welder as you may end up doing more harm than good. The other way is to completely drill out the bolt and romove the caliper and replace it, which is the simplest and fastest way of solving the issue. BUT, if your threads on the front wheel housing are stripped, you are in for a lengthy and expensive repair. Hope this project goes well for you, and have a good weekend!

Vise Grip always gets them out. Weld spatter on the bolt head if you cannot grip well enough and then use a cheater bar on the Vise Grip. If that doesn't work I'd slice the caliper in two and through the bolt with a Porta Band if that's what it took to get the caliper off. I'd have to replace the caliper without a core exchange the best price I've found is at www.rockauto.com.

What has worked in the past for me is the new torx sockets, I take one slightly bigger than the 3/8 your working with, like a 50 or 55 torx and hammer in hole, it will work like an easy out without damaging too much, but you need new slide bolts
