im trying to rebuild the 92 i need to know if it is possible to use the pistons from the 96

Ford builds several 2.3 liter motors one is an overhead cam and another is cam in block, NO parts are interchangeable between them. Ford also builds the 2.3 OHC in a turbo version, few parts are interchangeable, pistons definitely are not.

If the motors you are using are both of the same type and version then it is very probable they are interchangeable.

Nevertheless, if they are the same type and version it would be best to use the short block assembly with the other motors head, manifold and accessories. If this is not possible then it is obvious that the pistons would not be interchangeable.

I looked up the part numbers for the '92 Ford Ranger 2.3L pistons and the '96 Ranger 2.3L pistons and they were different part numbers.
