I think it is an adequate question for a curious person. Women's studies began studying gender in relevance to social stratification (ones position of mobility/status/priviledge/power in society) in order to understand gendered oppression, themselves, and their identity. In studying themselves (along with some men--and gender variant & nongendered people who contributed to studying women) in the context of gender, they were required to study another gender(s) as well. So, there are massive amounts of men's studies within women's studies. Many universities are actually changing the title of their courses to "gender studies" even though many are still the same classes that were listed under "women's studies" because it is a study of genders. However, not all groups have caught up to this trend yet.
um, i hope that may have helped to shed light on at least one aspect of why. ^_^
Also, vinceM had a very valid point about men's studies being the default, if you don't understand it it is very possibly because largely privilege is invisable to those who hold it.
An example of invisable privilege to illustrate:
In grocery stores, there is usually an "ethnic food" aisle. However, all of the foods in the store are ethnic. But the food of the dominant culture is not thought of in that context, because the privilege of having the entire store full of their ethnic foods is not labeled "US-American (or wherever youre from) ethnic foods," instead they hold the unofficial label of "normal food" aisles.
In this way, before women's studies set out to study women, the majority of "normal studies" were actually "men's studies" or they studied subjects from the perspective of men's world, such as the common exclusion from women in the classrooms and the predominant default usage of the pronoun "he"

I was going to make some snide comment about the need for a women's studies category because men have dominated learning for centuries but...............
That is a good question.
I think the social science category it is kind of like what's offered at university or college.
It has economics, psychology, sociology, and women's studies. Last time I checked they didn't have men's studies courses offered at university.

ALL studies, medical, psychological. economic have be almost exclusively "men's studies."
Don't need a category. Men are the default.
