Well.. I reacted when they shot me with the needle. I jumped just a tad bit... which was a mistake because it only ended up numbing part of me. They had to come in again (like a few hours later because the nurse apparently thought I was lying about the pain.... and give me more. Then before I went into delivery... it all wore off and I had to have it again.... (Whew) But no... I did not have a medical reaction or side affect to the epidural.

LOL, it's OK to be a little worried about that. I was too. Just be sure to tell your doctor about your reactions to those other medications, if you haven't already. I personally didn't have a reaction to epidural. Well not a bad one anyway. It'll be weird since you won't feel anything from your waist down. And not to scare you even more, or ruin anything for you but the needle they use to inject that is LONG! Like a foot long lol. And you have to be completely still, since it goes into your spine. My advice there: Don't look while they do it. :-)

I've known someone that did but they were allergic to all opiate based medication. Advil and ibuprofen are the same thing. The drugs they use in the epidural aren't even closely related to ibuprofen.

My wife didn't have a "reaction", but it did wear off too early. It took her a long time to push the baby out, so after several hours the epidural wasn't doing the job anymore. I haven't heard of anyone having a reaction to one, but who knows. Ask your doctor.

I am drug sensitive also and I did not have a reaction tho the epidural. I have been told that you can get headaches really bad after if somehow air gets into your bloodstream. Just let your doctor know your concerns.

Yes, there is a component in most anesthesia including spinals and epidurals called reglan. If you are allergic to it, you itch so bad that you want to rip your face off. Another component is Phenergan, sometimes used instead of reglan, that they give you so you don't vomit from the epidural. If you're alergic to that, it also makes you want to rip your lips and nose off your face but also gives you panic attacks, tremors and delirium...
I have had reactions to several medications (like antibiotics) but the anesthesia ones for me are the worst. I suggest you tell your doctor that you have a tendancy to have reactions to things and ask them to use whatever has the least potential for allergy.

There are ways to give birth without having an epidural. I didn't want one just because I was scared of having a needle in my spine! I hope that everything goes well for you, just remember that you will be able to accomplish far more than you realise.
I recommend you go to antenatal classes to learn about your options.
Good luck honey!

My wife gets the chills after the epidural is administered. Starts shaking like when you are hypothermic.
