Genuine true friends are few and far between. Once you find one, hang on tight.

You won't find genuine friends, they will find you. People tend to have the friends they attract. If you are surrounded by selfish people, you may want to ask yourself why that happens. There might be something in either the places you hangout, or your behavior, that makes the wrong type of people come to you. Different things work for different people, but it my case, I do a lot for people, and expect NOTHING from the people I give it to. The universe has a way of making things right, and in the long run, all you give, and more, is returned by people you never did anything for. When you expect nothing from anybody, there is no room for disappointment, and you're likely to be surprised by the good will of those you've never done anything for. That's my humble opinion.

I've wondered this myself many times. One of the reasons I married the woman I did was because of her unselfishness. I believe part of the problem is that a number of people are taught from the time they are very young to always look out for NUMBER 1. Another reason is that people don't try to see things from the point of view of the other person. They have a very limited perspective. I find that often the people who are good listeners tend to be less selfish. They actually take the time to really listen to what the other person is saying, and that indicates to me that they are sensitive to the other individuals feelings, and are trying to see things from there perspective. Selfishness and unhappiness walk hand in hand. You'll never achieve the same level of satisfaction by doing things for yourself, that you will by doing things for others.

I feel it too, however, I've found some people to be genuine and very few of them are interested in being my friend so it kinda works boths, eh? It seems that my loose wallet maintains some friends as well but, I too, am protective when I see this happening.
Anyways, who wants to be alone. It takes time for people to loosen up so if you give it some time, maybe you'll see more in the people in your social group than you expected.
Cheers.

I believe we attract what we 'send out'. In other words, are YOU selfish? Perhaps look for friends in a spiritual atmosphere - churches etc. Possibly there you may have people who will hopefully at least be on an ethical plain.
Good luck.

Stop being dependent on others and configure your life in such a way that you find answers within yourself or from your own self-originated resources. Noone owes you anything and you do not owe anyone else (except your children) anything. To believe otherwise is childish. Be very careful when forming alliances -- or get used to alot of disappointment!

wait till you find yourself in a very difficult situation where you think that all the world is against you, and you feel like sinking into your own self,...those people who'll stand by your side are your true friends.
