some look shorter than others? Although I have touched both the short and the tall ones i have seen/

The regulation height of rims is 10 feet. The reason some goals look higher or shorter then others is the background. A closer background makes the goal look lower and a background that is further away makes it look taler. The size of the backboard also has an effect. A really big backboard will make the goal look shorter while a small backboard makes the goal look higher. This is why those outdoor goals with tiny backboards look like their about 13 feet tall.

There is no regulation height for this although it is generally between 9'3" and 9'6".
The distance from the rim to the floor is 10 ft. The distance from the backboard to the free throw line is 15 ft. The rim is at a 90 degree angle to the backboard and is mounted to it.

The rim is 18" in diameter

Standard height for the rim off the floor is 10'. The diameter of the rim is always 18". Backboards do vary as there is no real standard except for in competition.
