Put in Windows 2000 or XP disc.
Let it boot from CD.
Choose start new installation
Delete and current partitions.
Turn computer off.

Or if you don't have one get a bootable Windows 95/98 diskette and boot to that. Then run fdisk and format from there.

But, if you are worried about any data there are still ways to retrieve it.

Safest way...keep old harddrive and fit a new one..very simple and cost effective as it saves your valuable data from being retrieved.
There has been much in the news recently regarding huge stockpiles of old harddrives being used for fraudulent means in Nigeria.

If you can't refit your old harddrive in a spare bay or are changing to notebook or Mac, just buy a harddrive enclosure about $20/£10 and you can use old harddrive as portable external storage for new system.

Stay safe don't pass data onto friends or other family member you can't control who has access to your details.

Good luck

Norton System Works has a wipe drive utility that will change every bit on the drive to a zero, effectively wiping it out. You can even put it in Department of Defence (DOD) mode and it does the same operation several times for added security.

Then you might re-install an operating system and what-not.

You can do a reboot. What that would do is erase everything and re-install all the programs it originally came with. Usualy those CD's came with your computer when you first bought it.

Murder the hard drive first with a hammer, buy a replacement , install it if you need to and then sell it minus the hard drive

the problem is that after you delete all of your files off of the hard drive the person you sell it to can download "undelete software" and view all of your files.

you shouldn't really sell your computer without buying a new harddrive and taking yours out.

giv/sell it to someone you trust and know.
