The county you live in should have a legal aid office. That is the first place to start. I don't know why you need an attorney, but it is actually easier for a criminal non-pay to get an attorney than someone with family law issues (e.g. abusive spouse). ~Sigh~Politics.

Contact your local county or state bar association. They often have referral services, and many attorneys will give some limited advice, or even take a case pro-bono or on contingency.

Many cities also have legal aid clinics, where specific types of legal advice are available. Check your local listings.

There are a lot of attorneys that do pro bono work at least once a year, because it looks good on their resumes. (And on the company books.) I would suggest calling the Law Society for your area and asking them to refer you to someone who might take your case for free.

It depends on what type of lawyer you need. If it is for an accident, disability, etc, many will take the case for no money down and they don't get paid unless you win. Otherwise there are Public Defenders who are appointed by the court if you can't afford one.

There are legal aide societies in most good size communities. Most Bar Associations also require that their members do a minimum amount of probono work.
