You were offered a job. What does it matter if you were placed with 18 women or 18 men of any race. You are the one who has the problem, not the employer. He gave you an opportunity and you blew it.

Considering an employer cannot discriminate (thank God) against Gender or Race...Yes. If they did not hire you because they thought the dynamic may be difficult due to Gender or Race, it is they that would have been wrong and you could sue.

One way to perhaps prevent situations that may feel awkward would be to ask to meet the people you would be working with. If you then feel that you would be uncomfortable, you can turn down the position if offered. I do this even as a Caucasian Male.

Read ADF's answer and ponder the criteria. Your job description and reasonably expected work conditions play a part also. Aslo you say that working with women and being african-american pose you a special challenge here... you will need to be able to prove that this situation specifically posed you a challenge beyond the norm, and that it is probable most other men would feel the same. Also you will need to show how this situation caused you enough discomfort so as to force your resignation. And hopefully you registered complaints or concerns formally before you resigned... otherwise the company will simply say you gave them no opportunity to rectify the situation.

Specifically, what were those 'difficult challenges'? Were you discriminated against due to your race or gender? The women I work with are constantly-bickering biotches, but I let them back-stab one another and do my job. Working with a lot of women sucks --because women are petty. I think the women would've looked to you as an ally because you're a man. So unless you were put in a job you could not perform (say like tampon tester) I think you made a mistake by quitting.

What is the problem?

Your employer didn't discriminate against you and did everything legally and ethically....

Sounds like you have major insecurities.
