I just built a deck with PT lumber and would like to eventually paint it. I heard that you must wait a long time before painting PT lumber, so it will dry.

If you paint it before it drys, it will seal in the moisture and rot from within. Save some of the scrap lumber and leave it out near your deck where it won't be in your way but will be in the same conditions your deck in dealing with. Drill into or cut into scrap after a few months of good weather or even better to wait until next year and see it any moisture is still present in the interior beforre painting and sealing.

Fergy,

My husband has been in the construction buisness for many years. He is always told people to wait at least 1 year. Other wise the treatment they put on the wood will not allow the paint to absorb. Hope this helps.

answers two and three are right, but now that it's fall you'll have to wait till next year, and it depends on the amount of sun that hits the deck and the weather, you'll be waiting around a year.

thats correct, reason being to wait is that the material will shrink....so allow it to shrink then caulk the joints and then paint..we wait, depending on the time of yr, winter summer, about 2 months........if summer about a month
