Could anyone just briefly give me an explanation as to what a database's role in an ERP system is? I have to do a research paper on the topic and I was just looking for a basic understanding so I could get started. Thanks!

Hi there.

The database of your ERP contains all the data needed... all the files that the ERP need to work properly.

For example the customer file, the purchase order file... everything is stored in those files : they make the database !

Do you need any other info ?

The ERP system is the business rules that will manage the data stored in the DB. It is a very complex part of the tool, and will manage the security, the workflow, the different interfaces to the data.

The data itself is stored in the database. Theoretically, you could use any database without any impact to the ERP. However, in real life, ERP systems support one or two different database systems, generally Oracle, DB2 from IBM or Microsoft SQL Server.

Think of it as your car: the engine is the database. It gives you the power to drive the car and get it somewhere. The body of the car is the ERP: it provides the features (radio, leather seats, etc.) that make the engine useful. Without the body, the engine won't get you anywhere, but without the engine, the body is useless too.

a database is the where and how the actual data is stored on the system. It helps organize the data, provides way of retrieving the data and can also help avoid data errors with internal edits.

The database is the heart of an ERP system.
