Well this is an old chestnut much discussed in a UK publication called New Scientist.
The first order answer is that it is silly. You present the same area to the rain seen from above (which is falling from the sky) whether you stand normally or duck, in fact if you duck you probably have a slightly higher area. BUT rain does not fall from the SKY it is blown by the wind and comes at an angle and therefore if you duck you present a smaller area to the rain.
However the true answer is that you duck because rain on your face is uncomfortable and if you put your head down and run you will get out of the rain much more quickly, with less rain running down your face and inside your jacket. So it is all to do with comfort and the way peoples cloths are configured.
See also the related question of whether running in the rain helps.

Jade, is it really that people duck as you say? Or is it that people who are caught in the rain want to keep warm so they hold their jacket closer or hug themselves as a means of preserving body heat? Maybe if you considered these small peices of information a little more you would not have to ask such a lame question. Just because you walk around in the rain as if it is a chance to shower does not mean everyone shares the same views....So please come back and give a more intelligent question when appropriate. Thank You.

When I'm wearing my glasses I duck so the rain won't get them as wet. Plus, I have bangs and rain will flatten them. Rain will also mess up make up.

I do it to keep the rain off my glasses. It's hard to see through glasses with rain on them.

Actually it's an automatic response to protect the back of the neck from rain running down it-
Watch someone with an umbrella- they won't do it.

yup, it's dumb to duck. that just means more rain wil hit your back.
or like the other person said, it'll take longer to hit them therefore once they reach shelter, they would have had a few less rain drops on them.

I thought it was because we don't like cold water hitting the back of our necks. Animals do the same in the rain and wind, they hunch up.
