Copyrights are for original artistic or creative works. You cannot copyright a name for a product. Details at http://www.copyright.gov

Trademarks are available to protect product names, but only if the product is (or soon will be) in the stream of commerce. So, you cannot just trademark a name because you might use it in the future. And trademark registration is fairly expensive, so it really is only useful if the product is in commerce. Details at http://www.uspto.gov
