First off, is the memory you've installed the correct modules for your board? In other words, does it support it? Example, I have a board that support PC3200, up to 400 Mhz clock speed, and it is dual channel. However, when I try to install the same specs but the memory is from Dell, it didn't work. I later found out that Dell's memory modules are proprietory and only work for their products.

Also, I tried installing PC4000 64x64 and it didn't work. I currently use PC3200 32x32. Check your manual to see what type of RAM your board can support.

As long as your motherboard can support the type of RAM you are installing and support 4 GB it should work. Windows XP can read up to 4 GB RAM, to get over 4 GB, you would need a 64 bit processor and a 64 Bit version of windows. (Ex Windows XP x64 or Windows Vista x64)

Look in the manual or on the manufacturer's site. It will tell you how much total RAM it can hold. If it has 4 slots, it probably holds 4GB (1GB per slot).
