Al-Qaeda is not the first Islamic terrorist group and it's not the last.
Others are Muslim Brotherhood, Islamic Jihad, PLO, Mujahadeen, etc.
All of them are united by the belief that Islam is the one truth faith and that secular governments are the reason why the world has so many problems. They don't believe in governments - they believe that Islamic religious law (Sharia Law) should rule the world.
If the whole world converted to Islam and followed its beliefs then one ruler (a Caliph) would rule the world.
They believe that will solve the world's problems and they are taught that its okay to use violence, via a holy war (Jihad) to kill non-believers (infidels) to achieve their aims
