Try Frebreeze and let book dry after application. Don't douse it, just a light spray a few pages at a time and wait. Repeat until whole book is treated.

Nicotine is of course water soluble, and smells, so this has to be removed carefully with baby wipes etc if the books are leather, just a wet kitchen towel or a flash wipe if they are paperbacks. The yellowing of the tops of the pages will always be there. Then place cedar sticks/strips on top of the books for the next ear or so, this will draw out the smell slowly and discourage paper eating beetle's too.

Place each book in a large ziploc bag with some baking soda for a few days - don't get the baking soda on the book. OR - spritz the book with a little Lysol - don't douse it, just lightly spray it.

I hate it when my books smell like cigarette smoke!

Well.. getting the smell from books is certainly different from getting the smell from a car or house.. From books.. the only way is to gake the books outside(not in the rain, sun, of course) but on a table in the shade and let them sit there all day.. they should be as much separated as possible.

Leave them in a closed container with baking soda. Baking soda removes odors. You may want to give it a few days to work though. If that doesn't work, remove the baking soda and try putting in some dry laundry soap, close the container up again and give it a few days. Neither will harm the books.
Tip: put dry laundry soap in open small containers around the books, not directly on books. That could possibly harm them.

There are industrial order removers you can get at local hardware stores. Fan books open inside a box(anything to trap Oder so remover can work effectually), and place Oder removers (usually in a small casement) inside. I may take a week, but it works.
Or you could "cover" the smell using same method, but with an aroma sent. Commonly found in "dollar" stores.

See if you can find an old book dealer. There is cedar chips or something that you could put in an airtight container with the books and it will get rid of the odor. Worked for an old book that smelled musty. Good Luck!!!!!!!!
