Well make sure you get a version that you can use the downgrader software on.
Without this there is very little you can do apart from play games and go online plust watch umd's.
Get it downgraded to 1.5 and this is where it gets interesting, you can download games (illegaly) and have 4 - 6 games stored on your memory card to play whenever you want.
You can also convert any avi files or dvd's you own to play on the psp without having to spend £20 on an umd movie.
There is a lot of homebrew available which means you can make it do just about anything, you can turn it into a remote control for your tv, play old snes, gameboy and megadrive games, read pdf files, download game cheats, play music from the internet, even control your pc wirelessly from your psp, make it into a diary/organiser, play user created games, play old pc games such as quake2 and doom, use applicatons like paint.
The list is endless and new uses are bieng created every day, you just have to make sure your psp is either a version 1.5 or capable of bieng downgraded to 1.5 (in other words not a 2.8)
Soon you will even be able to play ps1 games on the psp.

I had a PSP for about 5 months and I can only remember playing it a few times. I am big into video games and the PSP does have some great ones. The problem is the good games are outnumbered and being beaten sensless with a stick. If you want a good handheld go the DS. I have had that for even longer and the games have a much better selection. Plus sony is not making many more UMD's.
Pros: Nice screen, good look, Has Syphon FIlter
Cons: Screen shows a lot of glare, more bad games then good ones, battery life is alright.

You can buy mine if you like! lol I bought a PSP just before christmas because it looked like i wasn't going to be getting my hands on an XBOX 360, but then i got my 360 in january and havent really touched my PSP since, also because the games for the 360/PSP are so expensive i only bought lemmings and grand theft auto LCS and i have spiderman 2 on UMD so i havent really made the most of it i s'pose. It does have awesome graphics, sound etc but it does suffer with only having one analogue stick in my opinion, some of the games are really strange to play (King Kong for example!) the multimedia flexability is pretty cool this stomps all over the DS (for that reason alone as the DS has a better range of games, and the DS lite is just as good looking with decent 'albeit small' screens) the PSP can double up as your portable DVD player and MP3 player too but you really need to get the 1gig memory stick bare minimum really to make the most of these and i would suggest buying a few 2 gig memory sticks to really make the most out of it! Another fancy gimmick is the wireless internet connectivity, which is pretty ok, but hard to navigate web pages soon become frustrating and stops it from being a real alternative to a PC or laptop.

The PSP is the most powerful handheld console around, but you know what, who cares? Its all about the games and the playability and the Nintendo DS beats it hands down, with much more original and varied games, as well as innovative touch screen technology which opens up whole new avenues for gameplay. Plus its a whole lot cheaper!!
Yeah the PSP is fun too, but I'd spend half as much and get something that you'll play for years to come at home and on the move.

Download/Buy games to play on it.
If you like Gameboys, Sony Playstation and Xbox games, then you won't get bored. The games are similar, only smaller in scale. You can play music, store data on your PSP too.
When you get sick of a game, you can always delete it and load up a new one. Go ahead and knock yourself with a Sony PSP! :)

I love playing video games but I got bored with mine very fast and sold it oo ebay. Its just you just get bored of what ever game you have to play. And the whole point of having a psp is for portability. Are taking a trip youll just get bord of the game, and if you are at home you would rather play games on the consoles because they are not as limited. And the gpahics are better and you have more options. Recomend not getting it.

The PlayStation Portable was designed by Shi Ogasawara [å°ç¬ åæ°] for the Sony Computer Entertainment company. Early models were made in Japan but in order to cut costs, Sony has farmed out PlayStation Portable production to non Japanese manufacturers, mainly in China.
The unit measures 170 mm (6.7 in) in length, 74 mm (2.9 in) in width, and 23 mm (0.9 in) in depth, and has a mass of 280 grams (a weight of 0.62 lbs) including the battery. The TFT LCD screen measures 110 mm (4.3 in) diagonal with a 16:9 ratio and sports a 480Ã272 pixel resolution capable of 16.77 million colors.
The PlayStation Portable's main microprocessor is a multifunction device that includes a MIPS R4000-based CPU, hardware for multimedia decoding (such as H.264), as well as a vector unit dubbed "Virtual Mobile Engine". The MIPS CPU core is globally clocked between 1 and 333 MHz. During the 2005 GDC, Sony revealed that it had capped the PlayStation Portable's CPU clock at 222 MHz in software. Its reasons for doing so are unknown, but are the subject of some speculation. Various homebrew tools enable users to operate at 333 MHz, generally leading to a higher framerate at the expense of battery life.
The system has 32 MiB main RAM and 4 MiB embedded DRAM. There is no memory management unit for the CPU. No evidence of a TLB has been found to date. The Coprocessor 0 that normally manages the TLB-based MMU seems to be a custom effort by Sony and has no integrated memory.
The 166 MHz graphics chip has 2 MiB embedded memory and through its 512 bit interface provides hardware polygon and NURBS rendering, hardware directional lighting, clipping, environment projection and texture mapping, texture compression and tessellation, fogging, alpha blending, depth and stencil tests, vertex blending for morphing effects, and dithering, all in 16 or 32 bit colour, along with handling image output. Specifications state that the PlayStation Portable is capable of rendering 33 million flat-shaded polygons per second, with a 664 million pixel per second fill rate.
Unlike Sony's PlayStation 2 console, the GPU (PS2 Vector Unit equivalent) is not programmable, meaning that many effects that the PS2 can resolve in hardware must be implemented in software on the PlayStation Portable. Nonetheless, the implementation of a GPU in the PlayStation Portable is still a significant technological advance, in that it implements robust hardware-rendering for 3D graphics in the handheld market. The PlayStation Portable was preceded in this regard by the Tapwave Zodiac and the Nintendo DS.
There are over 100 different games you can get for it, don't think you'll get bored!

to be fair, I got bored with mine really quickly, but I never really bought much for it, you can store music, videos and photos on them, play the games, and watch movies (when you buy them). for me the only flaw with the PSP was the controls, at times it seems hard to move diagonally, but that might just be me, I'm sure if there are games you'd like to play available for the PSP then you'll enjoy it...hopefully
