I've no idea about American football, so could you please tell me if it's just another joke or really a "heroic" act?

Four touchdowns in one game is quite an accomplishment for a single player in high school. The joke is that he is a middle aged, shoe salesman whose peak achievement in life was a football game in high school.

What's really funny is that I have met a lot of guys like that. They were big athletes in high school, but now their lives are less than mediocre.

You could almost equate a touchdown with a goal in soccer. Of course, how big a deal it is depends on the competition--I think Al said he did it in the state championship, that would be a very big deal. Also, in american football, there are other parts of play (like getting into position to score a touchdown) that are important as actually scoring, but as a high school running back he was probably responsible for a lot of that as well.

Running backs are usually judged on the yards they gain, with scoring as a footnote to that (since being the guy who carries the ball two yards to score isn't as important as being the guy who gained seventy-five yards to put the team on the two yard line). Of course, they are judged negatively if they fail to make the final yard or two needed to get a first down or a touchdown, even though those yards are the toughest because the defense is concentrated on such a small part of the field and expecting a run.

I scored 5 touchdowns in one game in High School. I sell shoes...my wife and kids spend all my money.

I AM Al Bundy. Just 1 touchdown better.

First those would be "touchdowns" and not goal...it is a lot but not a heroic act by any stretch especially on a highschool field. NFL (then its a little bigger deal)

The point is that what is a big deal in high school is not a big deal in adult life.

4 goals would be good but not fantastic.
