Weaning slowly is the best way to keep yourself from becoming painfully engorged.
Ice packs can help.....bags of frozen peas work well!
Also, cabbage leaves worn in the bra.
Ibuprofen works well too.

Try a nice hot shower. The warmth will help your milk let down, but won't cause you to produce more. Don't let your breasts empty all the way, then your body gets the signal that the baby isn't eating much and will slowing start to produce less.
You can try chilled cabbage leaves. Sounds weird, but it works. The big leaves are the best. Cut a hole in the center for your nipple and then put them in your bra. They hold cold a long time and will help relieve a lot of the pain.
You can try a bowl of warm water, just stick your nipples in the warm water. It works about the same as a hot shower.
Pumping isn't so good because the signals it sends to the brain are the same as a baby nursing. The rhythm of sucking is still there.
Try weaning slowly, stopping one feeding a day, unless you have to wean for a reason. In that case, you just have to put up with the pain for a few days.
This happened to me. Found out I was pregnant with my youngest, and my oldest was only 6 months old. My milk supply was going down and I couldn't produce enough to feed her. I had to totally wean her and put her on bottles. It wasn't fun for either of us. Took her 14.5 hours of not eating before she gave in to the bottle, and it took me 3 days before I wasn't engorged. After that, it dropped off quickly. Good luck!!

The best way to wean him is too slowly reduce the number of feeding that come straight from you. EXAMPLE Day one substitue one breast feeding with a bottle and do it just like that for 3 days. Day 4 substitue two breast feedings with a bottle and continue on for 3 days. And so on and so forth. Don't stop all at once. Eventually he will realize that he can get a lot more a lot quicker from the bottle and may start to get fussy at the breast. Hope this helps This will reduce your pain

Pump as little as you can. Your body will continue to produce milk if it senses that it is being used. Put cold compresses on your breasts to alleviate the engorgement. I have never tried this, but understand it works well. Buy a head of cabbage and put it in the refrigerator. When it is nice and cold, remove some leaves and place them around your breasts inside your bra. Remove them when warm and wilted and throw away. Repeat as often as needed. A good well-fitting bra also helps.

Try ice packs. Other than that, I don't know. I didn't breast feed, but I used ice packs after my kids were born.
