You don't necessarily lose the citizenship/green card. The easiest way to still attain the green card would be if your ex-spouse is still willing to help you. Otherwise, you can go to an immigration lawyer. (I did this. There are ways to work around the system and that's why they have lawyers)
My advise on this matter would be to go to www.lawyers.com and search for immigration lawyers who offer free first time consultation. Gather as much information as you can from them and then choose the best lawyer. This helps save you cash in the long term because you're more well informed.
I'm sorry the marriage didn't work out. I hope the country works out for you.
BTW - can you all stop being so judgemental? More than 50% of American marriages fail anyway. So, this poor guy married an American woman. He had a 50% shot. Now he's grown to like the country more than the woman that he thought he loved. Leave him alone and be glad that he wants to be one of you and that he doesn't hate this country like the rest of the world does.

You got to be married for 2 years and get a green card. After you have permanent green card, you can get divorced and still get citizenship after 5 years in the country. Just don't break any laws - that would be grounds for denying the citizenship.

Getting married to get citizenship use to be much easier. Now though, getting married doesn't automatically mean you can get citizenship. After 9-11 The pressure was turned up.

Once you become an American citizen you cannot loose it if you get divorced. However, if she can prove that you only married her to get the citizenship, it may open some unpleasant doors.

You have to be married for 2 years, and if she finds out that you married her for citizenship, you are deported.
