find the prime factors of each 4=2*2, 6=3*2, now multiply them all together, but not if they are in each one. In this example 2*2*3 . So 12 is the LCD.

Here's another way to do the problem:
The LCD is 12
1/4 multiply both top and bottom by 3 which equals 3/12
5/6 multiply both top and bottom by 2 which equals 10/12
(you want to find the LCD first and then figure out what you're suppossed to mutiply each fraction by)

You then have 3/12 and 10/12 so add 3 and 10, which equals 13
it is an improper fraction so divide 13 into 12 and you get your mixed number.
13/12 or 1 1/12

I hope this isn't confusing you more I tried to break it down for you.

do you want me to "makeup" an answer? This is in the makeup section of Yahoo answers.

But to answer your question honestly:
The easiest way to do it is to multiply both parts of the fraction by the bottom part of the other fraction
1/4* 6/6 = 6/24
5/6 * 4/4= 20/24
Then you add the two together
20/24 + 6/24 = 26/24
then you reduce
13/12
to reduce to a whole number you divide the top number by the bottom number so you get and the remainder is the top number of the fraction 1 1 /2.

find the common deomentaor
would be 12
1/4 * 3=3/12
5/6*2=10/12
add 3/12 +10/12
+13/12=1 1/12

Well you need to go to the Homework category if you need help. Why don't you try and do it for yourself for a change? Do your own damned homework not everyone is going to help you get through life. You need to learn to get through school and get a decent job, I for one am not going to take part in ruining your education so get off the computer and do that math problem. And get a dictionary and learn how to spell while you are at it.
