From personal experience, I've never heard an iPod FM transmitter that was good enough--the iTrip is probably the best, but still, it's far inferior to a wired cassette adapter, or better yet, a hard-wired setup to your car audio system (I myself have Harman Kardon's Drive+Play, which adds an external control knob and LCD display, which makes it a whole lot safer to navigate your iPod while navigating traffic).

Yes, the transmitters are legal, because the range is very short--just a few feet. There are some geeks who've figured out some hacks to boost the signal (in hopes of better sound), and those hacks may *not* be legal.

A) I can only vouch for the Extreme Mac Airplay - which I've used for the past year while van driving around London and the South West of England - Sound quality and reception isn't bad , but your pod has to be placed as near to your stereo as possible.
B) Offcom are currently sorting this out - expect them to be legal in the UK late 06 / Early 07
C) I saw the Belkin Tunecast for sale in PC World !! With a disclaimer sign saying you can only legally use them in Europe .
It's perfectly legal now to sell these in the UK as they have now been legalised in Europe.
D) As I said , I know the Airplay is good ....... however I've just upgraded to the new video ipod so need to get a new model....Guess I'll go for the Airplay 2 or may try the new iTrip as that seems to have gotten fairly good reviews.
Hope that helps :-)

No they're not legal in UK (yet). I assume you mean the UK as you posted in the UK category?

The law in the UK is quite simple, you need a licence to operate a broadcast transmitter of any power level unless it is a licence exempt band/deregulated (as CB now is, I believe).

ANY transmission on band 2 VHF 88-108 is illegal unless you are a licensed broadcaster and you will be fined heavily and the equipment confiscated if you are caught.

I would get one, they are not illegal lol. Apple sells them for that use, many others sell them for that use. You can buy them in any place that sells ipods or support items for them. I would go with the one apple makes, or go with a brand name that you know has a good product
