I don't like using the excuse that loved one is hurt, sick, or in hospital. Thank you.

It depends. If this is an agreement you made with others, you would need a very good reason for changing it (besides just not wanting to go).

Take a good look at what is the greatest good for EVERYONE the plans affect. If the greatest good is for the plans to go forward, dive in and make the best of it. If the best is for the plans to be postponed or cancelled, document it and present your evidence to everyone else. If you are right, they will see it and agree.

But, if you are just wanting to blow it off for your own benefit, don't. There is a thing called "Personal Integrity" - and every time you do something selfish (when you know it will hurt someone else) you damage your own Personal Integrity. Which means little by little you will feel less worth being a friend to, and less worth being trusted. It's not worth it.

I just tell people the truth, that I really don't want to go or do whatever they want. I just come right out and tell them. "I'm sorry, but I really just don't want to go." "I'm sorry, but I just don't really feel like going tonight, maybe next time. Thanks alot for inviting me." "You know I am so tired, I really just want to get in my pj's and watch a movie. We will get together real soon."

Some people push and push me and I just have to stand my ground. If you do everything people want, you will not have your own life.

I also put my foot down, when people ask my kids to do things that I don't approve of or is dangerous. I just tell the parents no, my child will not be doing that or going there. Of course, you will have some people think you are odd, but, oh well, it's your life!! Not theirs!!

If you really don't want to tell the truth, (the real reason you don't want to continue with the plans )whatever excuse you use, just make it the truth. For example, "No, I'm sorry, I can't come tonight, I forgot I told my mom (or sister, or cousin) I would stop by." Then stop by your mom's (or sister or cousins) house a few minutes, then go home!!

I have told people I will be out of town on a last minute trip, then I drive to the next town, then drive back!

I will tell people something personal came up and I will have to cancel.

I will tell people I have a family issue and need to cancel.

I will say that my kids begged me to do something with them instead and then go do something with my kids.

I've found excuses don't really work because the other person can sense when we're not being sincere. Besides, it's lying and it makes us feel guilty. Try telling them the truth. It works better in the end even if it hurts or angers the other person.

Be sure your sins will find you out. My mother used to tell me that all the time, and I have found it to be true. You have to tell the truth. I can almost guarantee you will be found out if you lie. If the people involved are close to you, then they will understand, and if not, then you are no better or worse off. But don't lie, it will come back to bite you.

You don't really owe anyone an explanation...simply say that you won't be able to make it. That won't be a lie, and should be sufficient. Offer a raincheck with the person also...great good-faith measure that could soften the blow. Good luck!
