There are many issues where the vast differences between the rich and poor nations/ peoples of the world are evident and increasingly arise in international debates and conflicts.

There is a glaring disparity between the wealth and higher living standards of most countries in the Northern hemisphere, and the poverty of most of those living in the Southern regions. This gap is in part caused by differences in geographic/natural conditions, and diversity in cultural traditions. However, another influential historical reason for the lopsided distribution of global wealth was colonization and the policies of imperial powers. The centuries of domination and economic exploitation by Europe, and later the United States and Japan, clearly shifted wealth to the Northern/ industrialized countries. Colonization directed wealth and resources, for centuries, towards the populations in the imperialist countries. That imbalance remains today.

How can a nation be powerful if it doesn't even take care of it's own citizens? How can a nation be taken seriously when it's a rich nation yet millions live in poverty?
