I love all these home remedies and myths that people still believe in. First, if your mother had them, it does NOT mean that you will get them. Stretch marks have NOTHING to do with genetics; they are caused by rapid stretching of skin. In order to prevent or lessen the chances of having bad stretch marks, you should keep your skin moisturized during your pregnancy. The best time to moisturize your skin would be after a bath or shower, because your pores are open from the warm water and therefore will absorb more. Lotions with aloe in them are great; I recommend Jergens. Also, lotions that have shea butter in them are great, and you can also use cocoa butter. Apply the lotion liberally and massage it into your skin. Something that my mother did with me as a child and that I continue to do as an adult is to mix lotion with a little vaseline in your hand and then apply it to your skin. This will seriously soften your skin and help it retain the elasticity so that you don't end up with horrible stretch marks.

There's no real way to get rid of stretch marks (although they do have creams to make them fade), so your best defense is prevention. A couple times a day rub some cocoa butter or one of the stretch mark creams (there are probably a dozen different kinds) on your stomach. Any moisturizer will work. This helps to keep the skin softer, and as your belly stretches during pregnancy, the skin underneath doesn't split as easily (this splitting is what causes stretch marks).

My husband used to rub it on my stomaach every day. We kind of made it "our time" after he had been working all day and, up til the last couple months of the pregnancy, I had too. I think he enjoyed it more than I did, and he felt like he was helping with the pregnancy.

You will still get some stretch marks, but not nearly as many as you would if you didn't use the lotion.

Good luck.

What i did is (and remind you i was 100 lbs when i got pregnant and gained 62 lbs by the time i delivered)....i would take a bath with a little bit of baby oil in it. then got out and used Palmer's lotion all over, then Palmer's cream for stretch marks (pretty thick) all over my belly and sides of my thighs. I would do this everyday and would apply the cream 2-3 times a day.
I delivered with only one stretch mark on my thigh...Literally, ONE!!! So it seemed to work with me.

I've heard two things: You can't prevent them and Johnsons&Johnson has a lotion that says it helps to prevent and make them go away. I tried it but it didn't work. But I also already had some before I was pregnant :) that may be the difference :)

no way... if your mother got them you will get them. They are in your genes and they are hereditary. Sorry to tell you that. FACT : Cocoa butter WILL NOT PREVENT STRETCH MARKS!! Good luck!
