The term "founding fathers" used to have a more restricted meaning--it meant delegates to the 1787 Constitutional Convention.

Under that definition, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and Samuel Adams were not "founding fathers," as none of them were at the Convention.

Washington and Franklin were. But the most influential man within the convention was James Madison. He was the principal author of the so-called Virginia Plan and Virginia's main spokesman at the Convention. Indeed, Madison was sometimes called the Father of the American Constitution.

While I agree that Adams and Jefferson were key for the work they did on the declaration and their independance stance in conventio you also have to add Sam Adams. He was a key player in organizing the Sons of Liberty and in the early call fpr a convention. He was also a key voice for independance. Of course Franklins work in France and Washingtons holding the Army together cements their place.

John Adams and Thomas Jefferson for their stance on independance and work on the declaration. Ben Franklin for his remarkable work in gaining French recognition. George Washing for his miraculous ability to hold the army together through setback after setback.
