I lived in Minnesota for 15 years and I would have to say that St. Paul would be my pick. Of course it depends what you are looking for. Certainly, Minneapolis will have more action, but St. Paul is beautiful and has great neighborhoods. Look into the Grand Avenue or Cathedral Hill area. Grand Avenue has lots of shops/bars/restaurants, lots of people are outdoors running/walking/biking in this area, including Summit Avenue which I think is just beautiful - all old houses.

St. Paul if you like the quiet neighborhoods...except for the East Side. Statistics show that there is less crime in St. Paul than in Minneapolis. St. Paul is in Ramsey County and the property taxes are less than in Hennepin County, where Minneapolis sits. I have lived in Minnesota all my life (43 years) and I still like St. Paul better than Minneapolis. It is true that Minneapolis has more entertainment, but it's just a hop, skip and jump away from St. Paul.

Hi....how about an alternative? St Cloud MN. It is close enough to the metro that you could commute (many people do). It is a large college town that keeps on growing, has more than a few colleges/schools and there is always jobs in the paper. It is on the Mississippi River.
Other posters are right too. Taxes and expenses higher in Mpls and Hennepin County. St Paul a little quieter and cheaper but the action is over in Mpls.

I'd agree with the others. Minneapolis is a much more lively town, and seems to have significantly more cultural activities. However, since the cities are adjoining, and there are many suburbs, it's not difficult to get from one to the other. Anywhere in the Twin Cities area is nice enough. Remember to pack your heavy coat and mittens, though. It gets COLD there!
