I agree with "adventurepast" completely. Juneau also has The Great Alaskan Brewing Company...which is one of the best brands of beer anywhere. There's only one little draw back to Juneau...you can't drive in and out. You have to leave via boat, ferry, or plane...and that is not an inexpensive thing to do.

Juneau in my opinion is the best place anywhere. All the modern luxuries of of any big city down south, friendly people, no gangs and some of the best scenery in the world. In one day you can catch a 100 pound halibut, view whales, bears and mountain goats and end the day seeing a world class play or concert. In town everything is within walking distance and the big box stores are within 10 miles. The wilderness is only a step away. Most people that see the real Juneau want to move here and a lot have.

I lived in Anchorage for a few years, and while it got cold sometimes in the winter (-10 to -20) it generally doesn't get quite that cold. If you are looking for a warmer place, Homer is a nice town (population 3,500) and doesn't get very cold in the winter, nor hot in the summer. Juneau is a great city (and is much larger, so better luck in finding a job) and it stays even warmer in the winter.
You'll want to stay away from the Fairbanks area (and anything above it!) for it gets very cold in the winter!
Hope this helps!

the panhandle does not get as cold in the winter. anchorage will get cold but it wont be that low. Fairbanks can reach 45 below in the winter. also the peninsula does not get real cold. unalaska is a fishing port and probably the biggest town in the area, but it is very expensive.
