Neither, he's dead. The shell is an integral part of body structure. In fact, the spine is fused into the shell. So if there's no shell, there's no spine, and therefore no nerve signals reaching the body.

Wierd?! I have seen this same question asked about three times? Is this a joke?

Your turtle as most people have stated would be dead. The turtles shell is not a covering but is part of his body and therefor needed for survival.

It's dead because the shell is permanently attached to the spine and the rib cage. Turtles can feel pressure and pain through their shells, just as you can feel pressure through your fingernails.
