It referes to the thickness of the cervix inside the vagina. During labor the cervix thins. The process is called efacing. So they measure it frequent to estimate how close you are to giving birth. The measurement is in centimeters and generally are your ready at 10.

It means that she is in active labor and needs to be at the hospital ready to deliver. It means that you are open 6 cm and that the baby is on the way down. I have had children and when I was 4 cm is when they gave me the epidural. I was told that they can not give you an epidural after you are 5 cm. If that is something that you want to do then get to the hospital as soon as you go into labor.

It means that you are open 6cm. When you are in labor you need to open 8cm to 10cm so the baby can actually start coming out before that you are not allowed to push the baby out because their is no room for the baby and you ca suffocate the child.

It means your cervix is opened 6 cm. In other words your in labor but now quite ready yet. 6 cm will not allow a baby to pass through. Open wider please.
