I am a teacher and I respect my elders, but when a principal decides on a curriculum that I opposed and then blames me for the bad results, what am I to do? The English Department voted "NO" on the new English books, because they weren't any good. The principal overruled our decision and gave the new program a "YES". He did this because the new books had many other benefits, like free headphones and magazines and cassettes. Now the parents start complaining and he wants us to apologize. When we started speaking, he went all over our heads and made us look bad. When in the first place it was his bad decision! What does one do now?

You deal with a bully by presenting your case with solid facts. DO NOT BACK DOWN. Say what you mean and speak from the heart. Remember your end goal is the well being of the children you teach. THAT IS ALL THAT MATTERS. Do not let anyone stand in your way of providing what is best for you and your students. Never give in to anyone elses way of thinking when it is opposed to your point of view....EVER.

Answerman has a pretty strong response. Which in the majority I agree with. The kids are first & last in a teachers world. You should stand behind your principles. The facts speak for themselves.
Since the entire department voted down the proposal. The entire department must feel the same way you do? Try having an informal meeting where the department gathers to discuss the recent events. Then as a majority decide how to proceed.
If, as you stated, the proposal was voted down by the department, but you forced to undertake the new program that you never supported, and then forced to proceed you did so with protest, the outcome does not lie on your shoulders. Maybe to many words to simply say NOT YOUR FAULT. In politics (school is another form of politics) things don't always go as planned and afterwards there is a fall guy. Stand behind who you are and what you believe. However, in the end the kids are the priority.
As a department you should meet and make decisions. If everyone stands the same ground life will be easier.
Good luck and thanks for teaching! I'll forward my apple soon!

sounds like a messed up situation. By yourself, you probably cannot do much. But, if a strong majority of the English department agrees with you, and together present your case to the principal in a non-threatening, logical, polite yet firm, way, then if he is any decent leader at all he will probably listen. A main concern of his will be whether or not he can save face, so in order to give him a chance to repeal his actions, be sure to set it up so he does not look like an idiot, otherwise there is no way he would voluntarily go down that road.

Even your boss has someone he has to answer to. Report him. Or change jobs. And one more thing:: DO NOT APOLOGIZE. Sounds like HE is the one that's in the wrong. Do NOT let him get away with it at all. Don't sit back and do nothing or he will continue with his bad attitude. Stand up for youself and do NOT back down. You deserve the best no matter what.

There's nothing you can do.
He has to allocate blame elsewhere than himself - even though he f***ed everything up. That's human nature.
Deal with it and move on.
As for the larger issue about bullying - people can only push you around if you let them. It's really that simple.
Stand up to this numbskull and you will be surprised how quickly he moves on to easier prey.

For some good reason, he is the principal. If you have any complaints, go to the schoo board. If the school board, backs him, then he'll give you hell!! Why don't you change school??
