A .RAR file is like a folder. The only difference is that it is compressed which means it is packed up (like a suitcase) and you need some software to unpack it. Once it is unpacked you can see the contents.
The most famous software for unpacking RAR files is WinRAR which can be downloaded here: http://www.download.com/WinRAR/3000-2250_4-10007677.html
The problem withy this is that like WinZip, it is a trial software and can only be used for 40 days. The way that I use to get round it is to install it when you need it. Once your done uninstall it and then install again when you need to open something else. Another simular program to WinRAR is WinZIP which is very popular but unfortunately isn't as good a WinRAR as it only opens .zip files but WinRAR does ZIP and loads of others too.

RAR is a form of compression. Basically its used to make a file smaller so it downloads quicker. I
You need to 'unrar' it that is uncompress it to see the file. There are free programs on the internet that allow you to do this. Google 'unrar' for windows freeware - and you will be able to download a suitable program.
Avoid getting a shareware program though because in my experience, shareware = spyware.

a rar file is a file that is compressed to make it smaller and needs a program like winrar to open it
Download winrar from here

Install it and open it . Find the rar file you want to open then
click on file and then select all. now click on extract to and select the drive you want it saved to . When its extracted you can use it normally

If you are looking for a good program to open zipped files (compressed files) the best solution is WinRar.

rar file is a compressed file. similar to Winzip. To open a winrar file..u need to have Winrar software. u can dwnld the software easily from www.download.com or even the trial version from www.winrar.com..
