The bill seeks to define who is a prisoner of war for the purposes of detention under the Geneva convention. The problem stems from the question of whether terrorists can be classified as prisoners of war, or whether they are enemy combatants. Enemy combatants amount to stateless mercenaries not normally covered under the Geneva convention. I do not personally believe that enemy combatants are subject to due process under the constitution. The Constitution is designed to protect American citizens, and contains provisions for handling people who violate the law while on American soil. The idea of detaining prisoners of war indefinitely in time of war is nothing new, and it is wholly proper. It does not make sense to capture your enemies and release them back to fight against you again. Further it does not make sense to hold trials for enemy combatants. If they were captured as result of war, then they are legally detainable until such time as there is a cessation of hostilities at which point they must be released. The problem in the war on terror is that there is no end forseen within the near future. So we now are faced with how to continue to incarcerate terrorists on a more permanent basis. The question then becomes do we try them using military tribunals or civillian courts. No matter what the process, it should not occur in secret, and no person ever detained should be tortured. Votes on this issue should represent your particular conscious, but should also take into account what is in the best interest of the security of the American people.

As to impeachment. There have been no impeachable acts proven to date. Further, even if impeachment proceeding were brought, you would never achieve the 3/4 Senate majority required to remove the president from office. So while I realize that it makes some people happy to consider such a folly because of their hatred of the president, it is wholly unworkable in reality, and an exercise in futilty.

This bill disregards the geneva convention, and puts our soldiers in jeapordy if ever captured. Not that anyone follows the Geneva convention anyway. Remember, we are the only terrorists. They keep talking about war, but i never have seen any "war" televised yet. I've seen us bomb civilians. Bush said himself that Hussien had nothing to do with 9/11. So what are we doing in Iraq? Protecting our oil. That's it. Yet, you never hear that on TV. Why are we in Afghanistan? Because of the oil pipeline. It's all about the money. Everything else is a smoke screen.

Congress should stop trying to destroy America and turn their attention to destroying the terrorists.

Like many, you sound like you'd rather see our president dead than Osama. It's time to grow up and face the fact that losing this war means losing our way of life. There will be no USA under Islamic law. You will not have the rights to even post questions on the internet. Women will lose all rights. You will act like you are Muslim or you will die. Leaders you hate will rape and kill your mom, sister, and wife any time they please. They will cut your dad's head off for not bowing when they play the call for prayer. You will be one of the traitors responsible.

You need to decide whether you are the enemy of America and if not, stop acting like you are. If people in the USA get it together and support the war on terror, we can't lose. If they continue to act the way you have been, we cannot win.

the bill has nothing to do with terror, it has to do with the amount of power you let one person, or one group of ppl have over you. theres not any point in letting all of your civil rights disappear to be "safer", because its not safety, its living under totalitarian rule. the only way to be totally safe at all times is to be guarded 24 hours a day, have a curfew, be told what you can do, what you cant, what you can eat, who you can talk to, etc. at that point, you're not safe from the ppl that are "protecting" you.

if he's allowed to just throw anyone into secret prisons for any reason, and give them secret one-sided trials, whats to stop him from doing it to ppl that just plain disagree with his beliefs and might try to do something about it? he doesnt understand that being president doesnt give him unlimited power, and he doesnt understand that he's supposed to be acting based on what the ppl of the USA want, and whats best for them. he's running his own "Crusade" (which is a word with horrible religious connotations that alienated lots of our foreign allies).

everything the man has ever touched has been a huge failure, and his track record doesnt show any sign of changing.

No, it sets a dangerous president to pass a law to circumvent the laws. He should be taken to task about it. He is out of control and a danger to this country and the world and I will second any motion to impeach him.
