I just checked out all the answers so far, they're all wrong. The real reason is this: the bathroom is our last refuge. It is the only place to be alone and in peace. If you get a magazine you can hang out there in solitude for up to 30 minutes! No bitchy wives, whining kids. It's bliss. Life doesn't get much better.

Most men have been drafted into the Intergalactic Transtemporal Army. This means they are often called on to fight in wars occuring throughout all space and time. For example, the other day I was out fighting the Battle of Hastings on the side of the Normans, except it was on a parallel earth two centuries from now.
Anyway, bathrooms serve as portals to battlefields across the galaxy. So if your man is taking a long time, give him a break: he might actually be off in the Alpha Centauri system fighting Viking space demons from the future.

Some women can literally spend hours at a time in the bathroom just to do their hair or put on makeup so it's not always just the men.

With an assumption that this is a special space of their own and as long as they are in, nobody, not the Wife, kids or anyone else is going to disturb them.
We also enjoy various activities like reading, contemplating and some physiological pleasures...
It is a place very much in the house but at the same time away from the hustle-bustle of homly chores !!! At least fro he time being...

lol. Good question. Im thinking it's a sanctuary of some sort. They read, well actually look at their pornos. And they don't like to push or rush it cause their moms told them something else might pop out if they force it! If you don't like them being in there that long, then just make the bathroom pink and replace the pornos with romance novels! haha.

I've often wondered! I'm a woman and yet I tend to be in and out in a few seconds, maybe 2 min tops. I know that some women spend time combing their hair and doing their makeup in the mirror, but if it's in a stall of a public toilet, I often wonder--what ARE they up to in there?? I think if you were tights (pantyhose) and a girdle, it can take that long just to get them down and then back up again. I never wear either one, for me it's trousers and kneesocks. But then I hate to waste time.

I like to call this their time of personal reflection. They sit, read and comtemplate all of the problems of society. I am a firm believer that most inventions were thought of and inspired by a visit to the bathroom.

The bathroom is where they go to contact the Mother Ship and plan their daily attempt to take over the world. I believe the toilet is their mode of contact. It has some sort of transmitter built in...
