With regards to pro wrestling, managers are always paid by the promoter. They are characters and do not do any real managing*. Managers are used to talk for wrestlers that don't have great talking skills, and used to "distract the ref" and get the crowd fired up. In a few cases, managers were some of the top paid acts in the WWE based on number of dates worked. Bobby Heenan is a prime example (He only worked TV, which in the 80s, that was 3-4 times per month but was paid the equivalent of a top act that was on the road 350 days per year).

* Paul Ellering actually DID manage the Road Warriors for real. He negotiated deals, made travel arrangements, and invested their money wisely.

The correct answer is, that they now have their own contract with the promoter; for instance with WWE the manager gets paid by WWE, just like the wrestler (though obviosly not nearly as much). In the old days of the smaller regional promotions, the promoter paid the wrestler, who in turn would give a cut or percentage to the manager.

It totally depends on what organization they work for. WWE pays their managers well. Back when wrestling was broken up into 100 small promotions, managers usually worked for a percentage of what their wrestler made. Which was very little.

"Real" Wrestling: They are paid by their clients(the wrestlers) to manage them or through the organization they work for.

For the WWE: Wrestling managers are contracted through the WWE so that means that the WWE pays their employees.

Each case is different so it really depends on each wrestlers individual situation.
