Well. Of course India is prospering economically. Whatever gains made have not percolated to the masses. There is wide gap between haves and have-nots. India is the largest democracy in the world with the size of population that is only next to china. Despite myriad diversities in most of the areas, that are not present in any nation in the world, it is a miracle India is clinging to democratic values and conducting elections on mass level. Development activity is only on paper in most cases and that too if believable. The development works are not being transformed into reality and not reaching the people for whom it is intended. There is all round corruption parallel to every thing that is in the law and administration side. Political system is based on black money and so is the parallel economy. It is high time election expenses of the contestants to political positions are strictly sponsored by the state/ corporatism and such expenditure is audited. The services and trade sectors are in the limelight where as production is neglected. 70 percent are rural based and their contribution to Gross domestic product is very inadequate. The agriculture is on subsistence level mostly and it has to be made competitive and productive. People living below poverty line that is those earning below 1 dollar a day are comparable to the sub-Saharan nations and consist a t least 20% of population (comprising mostly farm labor and low level service sector employees) People are non complaining, i.e. those illiterate population who are at least 70% (I would say that , assuming those who cannot write their signatures but are illiterates or semiliterate or dropouts in school) and worst is the case of women who are not well represented in the legislatures.. Census is nearer to exaggeration and done at every 10 years. Officials seem to work for the sake of a mention in the records and seem to put no heart on the job. Work ethic in government sector needs to be improved by a great deal, especially in northern states. Police are not trusted and looked with suspicion by majority and they are still not accepted in the fabric of society
As one among their public servants despite the alien rulers have left their shores. Anything that represents official is not taken in confidence by the average public. The community work is given step motherly treatment. The average public is neither duty conscious nor concerned about rights that piously.
Still India has comparable to the best in the world in every sector. The country is well organized democracy with all the human rights intact excepting for some complaints in the borders that is understandable as the case with any other nation in the world as perhaps due to political apathy on the governments concerned on either side of the borders. There are very good number of English knowing workforce and intellectuals who are top of the world class. There is no dearth for best manpower (include women on top and middle levels) in any field under the sky at ridiculously and laughably low wages (apparently the basic nature of Indians is to be content and modest with what they have and their low demand for compensation for their precious services is owing to their simple living habits and styles). India is signatory to Human Rights and many other conventions, except nuclear proliferation treaties though known nuclear country. It is high time India is represented in Security council of the UNO to represent developing countries and the South prominently to air their grievances and unjust inequalities handed out by developed countries as the worst suffers are still African and Latin American nations.
The one most conspicuous thing absent despite the best moral fiber in their society outlook is lack of their civic sense and their adherences to caste and sectarian divisions at various levels that continues to be a bane and a drag on the development. The oneness in Indians is seen only on commemorative days of independence and formation of their republic. On other days their oneness is seen in the immediate aftermath of bomb explosions and post natural calamities at which time even people of all religions act as one, but never in day-to-day life. India is the best example among the countries that deserve the epithet of country of great ironies.

Hi.
Honestly, I never agreed with this political categorization of nations (i.e. developing, third world, developed, and so on).
To answer your question, India may be growing as GDP shows... and thats a fact, but this does not mean that the wealth of its citizens is too. India is still by far one of the poorest countries in the world, with tens of millions living below the poverty line. You measure the economic state of a nation by its wealth of its citizens generally/ or standard of living, and India does not do very well here, unfortunately. The reason for this is inequal distribution of wealth, 'bad governance', lack of education for many parts in India, low resources, low money supply, high budget deficit and so on.
Mainly, it all boils down to governance eventually...with a better governance all economic problems can be solved.

Indeed, India has acheived many technological and economical positions today.
But why still a developing nation? It is because Indian society is still far from the "welfare state".
The Indian society still has human rights issues. Furthermore, their conservative social structure -kast system- is also another great barrier for them to leap over and become a developed nation.
The Indians can get rich to the certain extent, but can not be developed nation until they solve the human rights and social issues. It is like running a marathon with your knee injury not healed yet. (similar to China, as they have no democracy and have notorius human rights issues)
In other words, the Indian society and the economy is not as stable as that of the Westerns' or far Eastern Asias. The Indians must work on the governmental corruption issues, and must take care of the majority of the population who suffer from the poverty. Well, interestingly, those poor, low class people do not have much opportunity to be successful as the few high class people; those "low-class" people of the Indian society, can not go to college.
There are many, many things to go over for explaning why India is remained classified "developing nation", but a few headlines I can give you is,
1. the Indians still did not accumulate the wealth. Remember, being wealthy state does not happen over one night. The wealth needs to be acheived in a long periods of time, in order to have a sercure financial castle and society.
The Indians, in fact, just rose up from the poverty.
2. many of the Indian population is still uneducated, and stuck in the old day's thinking structure.
3. the India is yet to claim the strong voice on the international affairs.
4. many many more other factors.
Now, lets go back to your original questions.
Will India ever be developed, Is it just the over population due to which India is lagging behind?
- Yes. But it will be in far future from today to be called "developed nation". I think it take at least 30~40 years from now or so.
About the over populated issues, well... I can not clearly answer this. Because the over population can be a benefit (plenty of work force, etc.) AND the disadventage (food problem, housing issues, etc.). One thing I can point out is, the over population is a common phenomena of the developing nations. Yes, I think India's over population is a small factor that lags India behind.
How is India developing?
-Amazingly. Many of the Western capitals began hard-core venturing, and India now has many factories and buildings. In fact, now the rapid growth of Indian economy led to a problem; pollution, poor labor law issues, loss of housings due to new buildings, etc, etc.
If you take a closer look at the American software industries or medical fields, you will find many, many Hindu employees. Yes, they are smart as hell.
Go to the local 99 cent store; you will be surprised to see some of the silverware products and other house equipments have sticker saying, "made in India".
The developing speed of India is so amazing. It is one of the fastest growing economy in the record (unfortunatelly, I do not have the numeric statistics to show you and quote.)
Although, I think the future of the Indian economy will be very similar to that of China- just rapid boost of economy, but slow improvement on social issues and the quality of life.
This gets seriously worse when we look at the gap of the rich and the poor.
Is it sluggishly upgrading economically ?
-sorry, unfortunatelly, I do not have knowledge to answer this. But I can give you a breif answer for this.
I think the world economy is heavily influence of the American (the U.S.) economy. It is because the American economy is the largest, and the most direct, the most active and still developable economy in the world. Unlike Europe, where there is already deep roots of the placement of capitals and there is not dynamic economical movements, the U.S. has a strong influence on India.
Yes, there HAS BEEN good upgrading of the Indian economy until right after the American mini-golden ages of the late 1990's, but because the recent American economy is not in good health, I assume the Indian economy is bit sluggish as of now (although I can not guarantee this...).
Why became sluggish? Simply because the Americans themselves are not doing well, and they stopped buying things. Not only the Indian products, but also many many other countries' products.
By the way, I forgot to say this;
"India, initially well known as an agricultural country has gone through a revolution and has prospoured in Technology,Warfare, Modern Machinery, Industry etc. "
It is true that India has acheived marblous development on many areas, but the Indians still did not achieve the most important goal to be called the developed nation; the "sophistication".
They can make things, but they are not as sophisticated as the Westerns' and the far Eastern Asians'. As I have mentioned above, this sophistication only can be aquired by long time experiences and most importantly, the human rights and clean government.
