Gunite concrete, tiled, vinyl liner, or fiberglass shells are all acceptable if installed correctly. In the end, the choice is yours and I imagine you would look at budget and warranties when making the decision.

Basically, whatever you can afford to spend. It's going to be the focus of your yard. If you can afford gunite, do it. If not, then vinyl. For filtration go with a DE filter, for sanitizing salt is now the way to go. You can opt for waterfalls and integrated hot tubs as well, to complete the yard. There really is no "best" in appearance, just to you and every yard is different ,as is the house. You want that pool to compliment it. Putting a rectangular pool into a natural looking back yard just looks plain wrong. Same goes for a free form pool in a boxed yard. Whatever works and you can spend.

get a saltwater pool! i recently went to a ranch out of lampasas and they had a saltwater pool and it was unbelievable!!!
