Wise, or familiar with, to the ways of living or spending time on the streets -- almost exlusively those of a large city.

By example, a person from a small mid-western town, may not know how to avoid being pickpocketed, where not to go in a city, or what vendors to avoid, etc like a person who grew up or spent alot of time in the city would.

when someone says you are "street smart" or "street wise" it means you are capable of everyday social and physical situations. you are able to handle yourself in the "human world" or the human social environment. it means to have knowledge of the world, and of human behavior and psychology.

as opposed to "book smart," which is having knowledge that would not be used on a day to day basis, such as knowing history, science and mathematics. book smart, is knowledge of academic subjects and trivial information.
