Like someone above said, they want to know if you are omitting a bad reference. Besides, it shows how strongly you want to work. Persons who have been out of work for a long time don't want to work. (OK EVERYBODY SETTLE DOWN. I'm not saying that's true, but that's how employers look at it)

How dependable a person is and was there a good reason for not working. who would you trust to show up on time and regularly some one you Some one that took time off to raise a family or some one that was just board with not working and wanted to brake the boredom?

Because it shows you are a lazy unmotivated looser.
"What's the big deal?" You answered your own question. Why would an employer want to take the risk to train someone who doesn't care about their job?

They supposedly have this idea that it shows you aren't reliable or your aren't a stable employee.
I am with you, sometimes there are situations in life that a person takes off, and if you are qualified for the job that is all that should matter.

They want to know why you havent had jobs. Is it because you are a horrible employee and thus no one will hire you. Or did you have kids and take some time off. That's why.

because usually someone will skip writing down a job they had because they know they would get a bad reference and employers are making sure you aren't doing that

they prefer people who work because it shows they are willing to.they want someone long term and think because you have not worked for 5 years maybe you wont work hard or stay and they want both.
