Diamonds are carbon compounds. Natural diamonds come from the ground. Lab or man made diamonds come from a lab. But they are both the same compound, and make up. Either one you buy is still a diamond, but you will pay less for a lab stone, and there will not be any imperfections since it didn't come out of the ground.

Cubic zirconia is made in a lab from other materials to look like a diamond. They are different in make up, and their properties from a diamond. They got their name from zircon, which IS a natural stone.

Zircon is a natural stone that is the closest thing in nature to a diamond. It has a slightly lower hardness (9 instead of 10) and double refraction.

There are several other kinds of synthetic diamonds that have become popular in recent years due to their closeness to a real diamond. Russian diamonds, moissanite, diamond nexus, to name a few.

Here's a great guide for beginner's about the difference between diamonds and synthetics.

A "simulated" diamone is any stone intended to look like a diamond, so a cubic zirconia would qualify. So would paste stones, rhinestones or even cut glass, if in their settings, the intention would be to appear as a diamond.

Please don't confuse these with "artificial" or "man-made" diamonds. These stones are just as real as a natural diamond. The only difference is that they are created by a very special set of machinery.

Simulated diamonds are created in a lab and made to look as good and clean as a diamond. Cubic Zirconia are like real diamonds because they are natural stones found in the earth. The go through almost the same cleaning and cutting process as diamonds go through, but are less expensive.
