I don't know, but I'll agree that they're stupid. The dumbest thing about them is the name: reality show. There is nothing remotely real about them. They're scripted and edited more than regular TV shows. They use clever techniques, like using certain kinds of music, to make viewers feel a certain way about contestants. They edit video footage and add subtitles to make it appear that something happened that never really did. I think they're all rigged, if not comletely faked.

My theory on this is the same as "Why do people watch shows like Jerry Springer?"
I think a lot of people have become sick of scripted TV shows where everyone is attractive and wealthy with very little in the way of real problems. The shows that broke this mold are the ones that had real staying power. For example: Good Times. Those people had REAL problems. Seinfeld: They had some pretty unattractive people on that show, and the characters were weird enough to believe they might be real people.
I think people watch reality shows, and shows like Springer, because watching real people who are WAY more screwed up than you and I will ever be, makes us feel a little better about ourselves and our lives. We might not be perfect, but at least our daughter isn't having orgies with transexual midgets.

You may think they are stupid but some people really enjoy watching normal everyday people getting a chance to better their lives even if it is just a little tiny bit. Plus most of it is not scripted so you never know what will happen. Some of the reality shows are dumb I have to admit, but there are some that are fun. My favorites are American Idol, Americas got talent, and Survivor.
Have a good day

I have to admit I do watch some of them.
Mainly Survivor, Amazing Race, the celebrity real life shows, etc.
I guess its away of escaping your own real life sometimes. I love the competitiveness of Survivor and the Amazing Race.
I like to see how the rich celebrities live since I'll never have that chance. Some of them are just crazy and it hilarious to watch (Braking Bonaduce). Its nice to know the sickeningly rich have problems too. As for the Osbournes, I just love them! I would love to sit down to dinner with them for just one night!!!!
I can't stand Big Brother (annoying idiots!) and I stopped watching Fear Factor because it seems to be all about the bikinis now!
Well, a new season of Survivor has just started and the Amazing Race starts Sunday- can't wait!

Because reality celebrates the worst aspects of human behavior. Contestants are encouraged to be uncooperative with each other, and backstabbing, and ego-centric, etc, etc, etc. And when the meanest, most viscious, underhanded person wins the million dollars, it let's the viewer at home know that they are justified in acting in the same manner. People need to be told that they're not terrible people when they really are.

Because people think that if they pay attention to other peoples real life drama and BS, then they won't have to worry about their own. I steer clear of all reality shows. My life is all the reality I need.

Because scripted tv shows are even more stupid. Seriously, in my case, all of my coworkers watch them. So, if I want to actually have something to talk about with them, I have to watch them too. It's actually kind of fun to speculate on who will win.

Cannot tell you why people watch these bloody shows. I, for one, do not find any entertainment in them whatsoever. BORING! I would just assume watch a bloody soap opera, which is about as bad.

Because they prefer to watch other people live their lives instead of living their own?
I honestly believe it's because we prefer to watch other people and criticize them on what they do, which is completely pointless.
