No, everyone can hear polyphonic tones. That girl is thinking about "the mosquito" which is a ring that only younger people can hear. A "true tone" is a tone that sounds exactly like the real song. A polyphonic tone is made to sound like the song but sounds a little different and itsn't as complex. It sounds like someone has a little synthesizer and is trying to play the song. You can hear them if you do a search for "free polyphonic ringtones" on yahoo. =)

I believe those are the ring tones that only those who are under the age of 18 can usually hear. It has something to do with the maturation of the Ear.

Polyphonic ringtones are where there is more than one note played at a time, like a chord. Monophonic would be like hiting a single piano key at a time.
