Teach him. Put away "I don't want to look stupid" stuff. He's willing to learn, so teach him. Be there for him. Don't pose yourself as a better dancer so much in front of him. If you say you're pretty good - prove it by teaching him. If you don't know how to do it - don't tell us you're pretty good. Be humbe about it, admit that you don't know the leader's part, get some teaching videotapes and learn the leaders part for him. Or go to dancing school together with him. Once you past that stage, he'll be your best partner forever. It's worth it, girl.

Salsa has two basic steps, forward basic and side basic. Both have the same quick-quick-slow, quick-quick-slow tempo.

Remember, since you're teaching him to lead, he's going to be starting with his left foot while you start with your right foot, that way you're doing the natural opposites.

His signal for you to do the ladies underarm turn is to raise his left arm (your right arm) when he's bringing his left foot backwards (while your right foot is going forwards)

Those are all the basics for salsa. That's pretty much all I know of salsa anyway, although Saturday I saw a couple dance salsa incorporating crossover breaks and 5th position breaks (that was the first time I'd seen that) and I was intrigued, because I know those moves from other Latin dances.

I learned salsa at a University class in "Latin Nightclub Dancing", which was given for credit, although many universities and community colleges also teach similar classes in their "extension" or "lifelong learning" departments which don't always offer college credit.

You might also find group salsa classes at night clubs, public libraries, community and senior centers, parks and recreation departments, and churches.

I've danced in all of these venues.

Have fun!

Just teach him the basic steps. Go over the counts with him. Go slow. Then slowly start playing music so he can get accustomed to the pace. It will probably take him about an hour to learn. You can also purchase DVDs that go over the moves.
