You know what I find irritating? People putting a long answer promoting a bunch of programs that youve never heard of or they have viruses in them.

YOu wanted to know the best package, its Trend Micro Pc-Cillin.
Second I'd recommend McAfee.
Third Kaspersky.

Dont download any programs they tell you. The only i reapeat only safe antispyware programs that are free are

windows defender beta 2
adaware se personal
spybot search and destroy
ewido antimalware

thats it. your best combination would be trend micro with the 4 listed above while using firefox. thats all you need dont go on a download frenzy.

There are many great people who have given their valuable input regarding the question you asked. Let my pitch in my humble 2 cents worth.

To keep your computer safe from Virus / Worm / Mal-ware / Ad-ware / Malcontent / Hijacks etc. you need two basic things.

a) You need a good ( but easy to use ) Firewall.

Zonealarm is really good and a totally free Firewall. It is easy to configure and has options whereby you can decide what kind of programs should access the Internet and what kind of Programs should access your computer. There are others like Norton, Sygate etc they all have their good and bad qualities but even then, ZoneAlarm is the easiest to use.

b) You need a good Anti-virus Program.

AVG from " Computer Associates " is a good Anti-virus Program. It allows you to try it for a 1 year period before you actually buy it.

c) You really need to know what is bad and what is good on the Internet. This is to say that you need to be Internet savvy. One does not become Internet savvy in a short time. But if you are careful then nothing can mess up your computer.Just remember nothing in this world is free. Is something sounds too good to be true then it surely is not good.

Don't accept any Files / Programs / Pics (of gals) Audio files etc from anyone. Even if friends send you such files, be very very careful because though they may mean no harm, they too are human beings and can be fooled by others.

Never ever give out your Social Security Number, Bank account Number, Credit Card Number, Home Phone Number, Home Address etc. on the Internet.

Keeping this in mind proceed cautiously and confidently.

Good Luck .

I use Avira Anti-Vir, Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D, all of which are free. In the six years or so I have used this combination I have only had one virus, and no spyware/adware issues. All can be easily found by Googling their names.
