I have a daughter and a boyfriend. We do plan on having more children so somewhere that would be good for raising a family, excellent schools for both academic and athletics.

Stay away from:

-Any town within 10 miles of the Mexican border, including Brownsville, Laredo, Eagle Pass, and El Paso. These communities are very poverty-stricken and have high crime rates.
-Dallas proper and Irving. High crime rates.
-Inner-cities of Houston and San Antonio. High crime rates.

There are still tens of thousands of communities, neighborhoods, villages, towns, and cities to choose from in Texas. I have yet to find one I just despise, and the vast majority of them will welcome you. Once they see that you are polite, decent, law-abiding, and at least try to be friendly, you'll be treated like family.

Visit the Plano, Texas website and take a look. Our schools are award winning, we have low crime and it's not far from Dallas and major hubs. Most major corporations are based out of Plano such as Frito Lay, Dr. Pepper, Countrywide, Cingular, and many others. The job market can't be beat and everything is all right there. There are boutiques for the shopper, golf and country clubs for the snooty, and the houses are great! Collin County is a great place to live and I suggest checking both the websites out.

Fort Worth. The economy is strong, housing is cheap, people are supper nice (only people who have been here appreciate just how nice), low crime (and falling), tons of culture (it's the museum capital of the southwest, and is considered to have one of the up-and-coming music scenes), it's very easy to get around the city and traffic is seldom a probelm, schools are good and athletics are very strong. Plus, the population is very diverse but it has virtually no history of racial tension, even during the jim crow years. I have a house in a part of town that looks more like Oregon: beautiful tree lined streets, lots of green, nice looking houses, great neighbors. I paid $110k 18 months ago for 2000 sq feet and a big back yard with several trees. It was only 25 yrs old and came with all new appliances. No structural problems. Try to beat that.

I moved to that neighborhood from southern cal after extensive research of cities wih good affordability and good livability. For the whole package, there's no place like it. My daughter is having a baby soon, and after one visit they decided to move here from Ventura Calif to raise their kids. Fort Worth is just a great place for families. People will push north tarrant and north dallas counties, but they are much more expensive, traffic is much worse, and they mostly lack the kind of real community feel that you can find in mature neighborhoods in fort worth. I would say San Antonio is the only place that comes close, and it's noticably more expensive than fort worth.

Ft Worth and greater Tarrant County is growing nicely, and housing is still rather affordable.
Transportation is improving with the developement of the Trinity Rail Express.
Lots of things to do around town. Good Schools. Not as busy as Dallas, and lower Crime Rate.
We just went through one hell of a heat wave but things are nice now. The lakes are still low.
I'm originally from Evansville, Indiana yet have never regretted moving here...
