Generally accountants are well paid. It depends on your role and your employer (or if you are self employed, you expertise and clients).

Accounting is non-gender specific, there are about the same number of men and women enrolled in accounting programs and practicing accounting.

Very well. I would recommend working in the public sector (a CPA firm) before you go private. This gives you an opportunity to see what it is like at several different companies (your clients) and see what you like and don't like about accounting. You will work your tail off but it is worth it. I currently work for a Big 4 firm who has averaged 10% a year raises since I graduated in 2002. Not to mention I am called by head hunters twice a week asking if I am interested in new job opportunities, since accountants are hard to come by in this day and age.

No, it is not a job for men. Most accounting departments are almost all women nowadays. It depends on what part of the market you work.

Public accounting gets you great experience, but you'll work the hardest and get the least pay.

Government accounting is more specialized, and the pay will depend on the size of the government (the larger the government, the better the pay).

The private sector (stores, banks, doctor's offices, etc.) is diverse. You won't work nearly as hard as public accounting and you will get the best pay. But, you won't get much experience in a variety of accounting areas.

I've worked in all 3 areas, and I'm enjoying the private sector the best!

It isn't always the case that they DO make a lot of money. It really depends on the industry and certifications they have. Now a CPA will definitely make good money because of the extra skill they have over others that just got their degree and into the workforce. Usually they have a lot of fiduciary responsibility for the care and/or use of other peoples' money. Not to mention in the age that we are in right now, honest hardworking accountants are in high demand. As most manager will tell you, the people who control the money are the people who control the power.

Generally they do get paid well. But it all depend on which grade you are in. Mostly union guys get paid more than management. Also it all likes in the collective bargaining agreement and the type of employment you seek public firm or private one

Men and women can do this job equally well. Accountants do get paid well especially post-Enron.

As accountant I must say that some of the most accomplished accountants I know are women.
