William Lloyd 'Billy' Murdoch , the Australian wicketkeeper was the first batsman to score a century in test cricket.

This was in Test Match No.16, held at The Oval, London in the 3rd match of the Ashes series of 1884. The match was held between 11th and 13th of August, and Murdoch completed his double century on the second day of the match.

Murdoch went on to score 211.
